Pharmaceutical companies marketing directly to the public may be a reason for excessive increases in retail sales of painkillers in Indiana, says an AP analysis of data from the National Drug Enforcement Agency.

The Indiana Attorney General is creating a campaign
aimed at cutting down the amount of drunk driving in the state. It's a
campaign that uses the radio as a means of getting the message across. The
campaign is basically Public Service Announcements to communicate (and
"hit home") the dangers of drunk driving and drinking underage.
To have 8% of the population invloved in alcohol abuse or dependency is
something a state should be worried about. That's over 400,000 people
abusing alcohol. Abuse of alcohol is not something to take lightly, and to
have 400,000 people doing it EACH MONTH is a risk to anyone driving in the
state. Unfortunately you are bound to run into at least one of them on the
road.
Also with 22% of the population taking part in binge drinking,
there would naturally be concern for drunk driving.
In addition
to the legal aged drinker there are a good number of underage citizens
taking part in the drinking going on.
28.5% of citizens aged
12-20 years-old used alcohol in the past month. 19% took part in binge
drinking in the past month.
Another factor to consider is that
these percentages concerning illegal drinking are not going down. They are
predicted to up. By 2010 they are estimated to go from 28.5% to 31% and 19%
to 20% respectively.
This may seem like a small increase, but
this accounts for thousands of more teens getting involved in alcohol abuse each month. And
with the numbers already binge drinking we need more drug and alcohol rehab programs for the citizens
of Indiana now.
Prescription Drug Addiction and Dependency in Indiana
15% of high school seniors using prescription drugs to get high is a very alarming statistic. Some of these kids accidentally became addicted or dependent when they were given the drugs by their doctor for an illness, injury or an operation.
Parents are also prescribed these drugs and leave them in the medicine cabinet. Kids hear about them from other kids and decide to try them out. And guess where they get them? The medicine cabinet.
The problem with prescription drug painkillers is that you can become dependent on or addicted to them even if you've only been taking them a matter of days or weeks. And they can be very hard to stop taking.
Prescription painkillers like OxyContin, Vicodin, hydrocodone and methadone, for example, are very highly addictive. They're similar to heroin - and once you're addicted to or dependent on them, getting off them isn't any easier than getting off heroin. Benzodiazapines like Valium and Xanax are also highly addictive and hard to kick.

Do I Need Alcohol Detox or Alcohol Rehab?
People who have been binge drinking or have a history of heavy drinking could benefit from alcohol detox prior to doing alcohol rehab. Quitting alcohol can be painful and can have medical complications. If you do both alcohol detox and rehab, your chances of success are much better. And the detox process will be safe and more comfortable.
If you need help with alcohol, call Drug Rehab Referral.
We can help you find an alcohol detox and, if needed, an alcohol rehab program.
In view of all the above
percentages and facts, it is clear that the Attorney General has grounds
for launching the campaign against drunk driving and underage drinking.
But you can't wait and hope the public service announcements
will do enough to save your kids. Talk to your kids and friends about
alcohol abuse. Parents and friends don't give themselves enough credit;
you can help a friend or child with an alcohol problem. Help starts with
education.
It is also clear that prescription drug
addiction and dependency have to be aggressively handled. Hopefully,
prescription drug detox and drug rehab in Indiana will be the next
campaign.
