What are the Odds in Texas?
ALMOST 8% OF THE POPULATION DEPENDED ON OR
HAVE ABUSED ALCOHOL IN THE PAST YEAR
ROUGHLY 5% OF THE CITIZENS
USED PAIN RELIEVERS FOR NON MEDICAL PURPOSES IN THE PAST YEAR
During fall in the state of Texas, you'll find the
people at large talk about one thing: football. For good reason too, Texas
is possibly the state most associated with that sport. Although not a sin
to "live" football, Texans need to be aware of the odds the
family and friends are using drugs.
The University of Texas,
located in Austin, can boast of more than the college home of football star
Vince Young. It also was rated the #1 party college by Princeton's
Review List 2007.
U of Texas "party status" seems to
have quite the effect in the Lone Star State, because almost 25% OF
THE POPULATION UNDERWENT BINGE DRINKING IN THE PAST MONTH.
Here is what it means for parents: nearly 5% OF THE
CHILDREN IN THE 12-17 AGE BRACKET DEPEND OR ABUSE ALCOHOL. That
means that they do more than just drink it, but they depend on or abuse it.
So, most likely your 12 years-old child has probably 1-2 classmates
invloved in alcohol abuse.
There
is a new drug on the streets known as "cheese," this is a
compound between Black Tar heroin and over-the-counter pain medicine. Black
Tar heroin is a variety of heroin that is produced in Mexico. It yields the
same effects as white heroin (powder).
The effects
of this drug (cheese) are painfully influential. In Dallas alone, it has
been claimed to be the cause of 21 deaths.
There was an alert in
East Texas schools concerning the drug and its effects. Officials are
worried about the students in the schools as dealers procure the materials
for low cost and therefore sell at a low cost. This makes the target market
of 12 to 17 year-olds ideal.
If your son or daughter goes to
school in Texas, especially in East Texas, then the odds are high that
he/she has seen drugs and maybe even caught a glimpse of this new drug
"cheese".
