What are the Odds in Utah?
The
Utah travel industry would have us think of the state as an outdoors
paradise – a playground filled with ski resorts and golf courses.
Utah is also home to millions of Mormons and their religious
beliefs forbid the use of drug or alcohol in any form. So you might expect
to find a state with low drug use. Yet this beautiful state has a dark side
that is not often mentioned – Utah residents and school children are
using drugs and alcohol and many are in need of drug rehab.
According to the 2007 Student Health and Risk Prevention Report
• In Grade 6 (age 12/13) 14% of students have drunk alcohol and 10%
have used inhalants to get high.
• In Grade 8 ( age 14/15)
22% were drinking alcohol 15% using inhalants and 6% were using
sedatives
• By the time they're in Grade 10 (16/17 years old) 35% are drinking alcohol, 18% are using marijuana, 4% have tried cocaine and ecstasy.
• In Grade 12 the figures jump to almost
half the kids drinking alcohol – 43%, 20% have used marijuana and
10% have tried sedatives.
• 2% of students are high or
drunk while at school
• 8% have attacked someone with intent to harm
• 5% are carrying a hand gun.
Roughly
7% of the population use prescription drugs for
non-medical reasons.
Focusing on the separate age
brackets provides one with an even scarier vista.
12-17
years
8% of the youth in that age group misuse pain
relievers
18-25 years
13% of the young
adults in that age group misuse pain relievers
Attorney General, Mark Shurtleff, commented:
"The
problem is the pills are so available that kids are getting them at home,
and they see their parents getting high… yes it is a major
problem."
Drug Detox and Drug Rehab in Utah
Methamphetamines, heroin and OxyContin are Utah's most serious drug problems. Heroin and OxyContin abuse is widespread and it's getting worse every day.
Like heroin, OxyContin addiction and dependency can occur in a short period of time - even when you're taking them under a doctor's care. And it's the same with Xanax, Valium or Vicodin.
OxyContin, like other painkillers, requires a prescription drug detox program before a drug rehab. Withdrawal can be painful and uncomfortable - which is a major reason why once people start taking them, they have trouble stopping. Xanax, Valium or Vicodin are also easier to stop with prescription drug detox.
Methamphetamines are also very addictive - a drug rehab that last longer than 30 days gives you the best chance of success.
If you have been taking drugs under a doctors care, a prescription drug detox program may be all you need. But if your drug use has gone beyond that, you may also need drug rehab.

The role of a parent is to lead their children
into healthy, productive lives. They are supposed to set the example for
their adolescent children and encourage the child to live a good life. Do
an inventory of your medicine cabinet and make sure you don't have any
prescription drugs available to the young adolescents in your home.
