What are the Odds in Oklahoma?
One out of every 11 adolescents in Oklahoma uses cough medicine to get high
Intentional cough medicine abuse increased 27% from 2005 to 2006
5% of 10th graders and 7% of 12th graders got high last year using cough medicine
- One in twenty five 8th graders say they've used it to get high
Crush, Triple
C's, C-C-C, Red Devils, Skittles, Dex, Vitamin D, DMX, Robo, Robo
trippin' and Robo-dosing are the street names used when people talk
about getting high with cough medicine.
It seems preposterous
that anyone would swallow handful after handful of cough and cold tablets
or drink 3 to 4 bottles of cough syrup, but that's exactly what kids
in Oklahoma are doing to get high.
Dextromethorphan or DXM is
a legal substance that's found in more than one hundred over the
counter cough medicines. When properly administered it's an effective
cough suppressant. When used in high doses DMX acts like ketamine or PCP.
It gives the user a feeling of euphoria but it also impairs judgment and
causes loss of coordination, dizziness, nausea, seizures, panic attacks,
psychosis, brain damage, coma, and addiction.
Part of the
problem is that cough medicines are inexpensive and easy to obtain. Its
abuse is reinforced by internet sites that teach users how many tablets to
ingest and how fast to drink cough syrup, to achieve DXM absorption, before
the inevitable vomiting begins.
As a result, its popularity has
spread like wildfire and is evidenced by the increased calls to the
Oklahoma Poison Control Center. In 2006, 15% of all reported intentional
substance abuse cases involved DXM. What's even scarier is that the
majority of the calls came from users who were between the ages of
9-17.
Most kids don't realize that by abusing cough
medicine they can seriously injure themselves and that if combined with
certain medications already being taken, it can lead to death. Because
drugs are available over-the-counter it tends to obscure the fact that
they are harmful when taken in large doses.
Prescription Drug Rehab and Drug Detox in Oklahoma
But cough medicine isn't Oklahoma's only drug problem. Prescription drug abuse is also affecting a large percentage of the population.
In 2005, 9 percent of the kids between 12 and 17 reported abusing prescription drugs. With the epidemic of prescription drugs moving ahead at a rapid pace you can be sure the numbers have gone up since then. Oxycontin, Vicodin, methadone and codeine-based cough syrups - did the over-the-counter use of cough medicines lead to this? - are the most common prescription drugs used in Oklahoma.
When you have a prescription drug addiction or dependency problem, the best solution is often prescription drug detox as a first step. The withdrawal symptoms with prescription drugs can be so severe that people sometimes choose to stay on the drug, or start using street drugs like heroin and methamphetamine rather than go through withdrawal
