What are the Odds in Colorado?
Colorado ranked second in the nation in over all substance abuse but spent the least on treatment and prevention.
According to our internal forecast by 2010 nearly 15% of Colorado residents will need drug rehab. These numbers do not take into account the overwhelming and growing category of prescription drug addiction which could be as high as 15% of the population by 2010.
According to the Youth Risk Survey for 2003,
- 50% of the students surveyed in 9th through 12th grades had used marijuana and 25% of those had done so before age 13.
- And for those of you with kids in little league 25% of their teammates have already smoked marijuana.
- Cocaine is used monthly by 5% of high schools seniors, and 8% of people ages 18 to 26. Cocaine accounts for 20% of rehab admissions at this time and all forms of speed amount to nearly 40% of admissions in rehab.
- In addition 50% of these kids had alcohol in the past 30 days and 29% are already binge drinkers.
If you abuse alcohol when you are under age you have a 47.1% chance of abusing alcohol or drugs later in life. Alcohol abuse ranks highest for treatment admissions at 40%. The time to start addressing the problem is now.
How Many People Binge Drink?
In Colorado 49% of people ages 18 to 26 binge drink and 24 % of people older then 26 binge drink, 60 % of the population see no risk in drinking five drinks or more twice a week. In 2010 21% of the population may need alcohol rehab and may even need drug rehab.
What about methamphetamine?
A 2007 Methamphetamine Task Force report sponsored by the state of Colorado covers these facts about methamphetamines.
- The average age to start using methamphetamines is 21
- Admissions for meth treatment have been growing since 2000, it now accounts for 19% of all admissions.
Is Drug Rehab Needed in Colorado for Prescription Drugs?
It doesn't take very long to develop a prescription drug
addiction or dependency. People taking Vicodin, OxyContin, Xanax, Valium and a number of other
prescription drugs can become dependent on them in just a few weeks - in
some cases, it only takes days.
If you have been taking
prescription drugs for an injury or illness and can't seem to stop
taking them you may need the help of a prescription drug detox, and that may need to be followed up with
drug rehab.
Withdrawing from prescription drugs can be
dangerous and extremely uncomfortable or painful. Heroin, Vicodin and OxyContin all act on the body in
similar ways and, although it's not always needed, a drug detox program
can help you get through the withdrawal so you can stop taking
them.
Sometimes people taking prescription painkillers also
wind up turning to heroin - once their prescription runs out and they still
need the drugs because they've become physically dependent or addicted,
they look for something to stop the horrible symptoms of withdrawal. Heroin
fits the bill, and it's cheaper on the street than OxyContin, for
example, and readily available.
Next thing you know, the
promising young athlete who injured himself in a game and was prescribed
OxyContin for the pain has become a heroin addict.
