What are the Odds in California?

Almost half of California 11th graders use illegal drugs (43%)

One in Three report lifetime marijuana use

One in five smoked dope in the last month

30% of felony arrests were for drug related crimes

One in ten high school seniors use prescription drug opiates for non medical use.

7.5 million Californians aged 12 years old and over are binge drinkers
The drug problem in California is so out of hand the numbers have reached ridiculous proportions. As a resident of California, you're most likely aware of the diverse culture, unique geography, and liberal lifestyle that California has become so famous for. It may be the reason you live there. Unfortunately, those same factors which have made the state one of the nicest to live in are also the leading causes of its staggering drug problem and the rising number of people entering drug rehab.

And while 39.6% of Californians think that using marijuana occasionally (once a month) is a "great risk" that means is that 60.4% don't think so.

This is particularly surprising since researchers believe that smoking marijuana is overall more harmful to the lungs than smoking tobacco. As the state leading the nation on anti-smoking laws, you would think its citizens would have more cause for concern.

The thing about marijuana, aside from its own batch of side effects such as severe increases in heart rate matching cocaine use, anxiety and paranoia to name a few, is that it has also been shown to lead to more harmful substance abuse. It's not called the "gateway" drug for nothing. Many of those entering drug rehab started with marijuana.

How many people live in your neighborhood? Do you realize that over half don't think using marijuana poses a great risk? Perhaps your teenage kids are friends with their kids. Think they are getting high in the backyard? You're right, they probably are.

One of the worst problems in California is prescription drug addiction, dependency and abuse. With one in ten high school seniors using prescription painkillers they get without a prescription and don't need for any medical reason, California, like the rest of the country, is in the grip of these drugs. The painkillers they're taking are opiates - in other words, they might as well be taking heroin. They include OxyContin, Vicodin, Percocet, hydrocodone, methadone, and so on. There are a few more, but those are the major offenders.

Kids get these drugs from their parents' medicine cabinets, and from friends who've usually gotten them from the same place or from other friends who have been given them by their doctor when they've had an injury. Now that the drugs are so popular, there are also drug dealers all over the place selling prescription painkillers.

Drug Detox for Prescription Drug Addiction, Dependency and Abuse

Getting off prescription painkillers can be extremely difficult and painful. You can become addicted to or dependent on them within days or weeks. Trying to stop is not much different than heroin. Only 5% of heroin users who try to stop ‘cold turkey' manage to do it. As OxyContin and the other opiate painkillers are basically the same as heroin, the same thing can happen.

A medical prescription drug detox can help a person through the withdrawal process without going through excruciating pain. After drug detox, the person can then go into drug rehab.

Drug Detox for Heroin Addiction

Another major danger with prescription painkillers is that users often turn to heroin once their supply of the painkillers runs out. If they move onto heroin, there's a good chance they'll start injecting it: Which opens the door to a whole other set of problems - HIV, for example. In California, Mexican black tar heroin is common, cheap and easy to find.

Nearly 25% of the population over the age of 12 are into binge drinking. There are health risks involved in stopping heavy consumption of alcohol cold turkey.

Alcohol detox with medical supervision and 24-hour care may be the safest choice if you or someone you know has a problem with alcohol.

Drug Detox and Drug Rehab Can Help Keep You or Your Kids Out of Prison

As if the lives ruined, and possibly lost, through alcohol and drug addiction were not enough, there is one more thing you have to look at:

To combat the ever increasing problem, law enforcement has cracked down on illicit drug use and possession. During the past two decades California has experienced a 25-fold increase in the number of drug offenders sentenced to state prison. Incarceration rates for drug offenders are now 30% above the average of the rest of the country.

If your children go to school in California you should be aware of these odds and take appropriate steps to ensure your kids live a drug free life. But if alcohol and drug addiction, dependency or abuse have already touched your family, you need help.
