What
are the Odds in
Arizona?
Arizona is one of the top 10 highest-ranking states for
non-medical prescription drug abuse - second only
to marijuana.
In 2004 20% of Arizona residents over
the age of 12 used prescription drugs for non-medical use.
And
it's on the rise. In 2005 the number of new non-medical prescription
drug users surpassed the number of new marijuana users.
And in the month prior
to the survey being taken, the number of non-medical users was higher than
the number of users of cocaine, heroin, hallucinogens, and
inhalants combined.
So how does that shape up? Does it impact
you and your family?
Indeed it
does
- The most commonly abused prescription drugs in Arizona are, Oxycontin-type products, Percocet, Vicodin , Lortab and codeine
- Ritalin and Adderall (prescription stimulants) are abused by college students
- Benzodiazepines such as Valium and Xanax are found during drug busts by police
One in every twenty people in your
neighborhood is using some form of pain reliever, Oxycontin, tranquilizer, stimulant
or sedative and it's not for medical use. They're doing it to
escape something or they're doing it to "feel" good.
It's better known as getting high.
But not all people taking prescription drugs are addicted - sometimes they are just physically dependent. Even then, the withdrawal symptoms can be so severe that many people with a physical dependency turn to drug dealers in the street when their prescription runs out.
Either way, they are dangerous to take, and dangerous to stop taking. You may need medically-supervised drug detox program to get off them safely and in relative comfort.

It's interesting to note that the largest
growing demographic of users falls into the age bracket of 12 to 25. In
fact, in April of 2005 the Center for Substance Abuse Research conducted a
survey among college students to determine the perceptions and prevalence
of non-medical prescription stimulants.
Adderall, a stimulant
prescribed for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, ranked the
highest in ease of ability to obtain.
Now, if you went to
college in Arizona or elsewhere in the US, you know just how easy it is to
get alcohol. Adderall ranked second to alcohol and is on the same level as
marijuana. Surprisingly, the majority of users think
it's "safer" to use these drugs since they aren't street
drugs and are prescribed by a doctor.
On average,
students knew 10 to15 people who used Adderall or Ritalin in that month
for non medical reasons.
The 2005 Partnership Attitude
Tracking Survey (PATS) surveyed teens from grades 7 through 12. They found
that the primary reason for abusing prescription pain relievers had much
to do with the widespread availability and access.
Frighteningly, more than half (51%) of these kids think its okay
because they are not illegal drugs, 35% think they are safer to use than
illegal drugs, 21% percent said parents don't care as much if you get
caught and 32% thought there were fewer side effects than street
drugs.
But here's the really bad news. Want to
know where these kids are getting them from? It's
you.
62% of the kids surveyed said it was easy to get
from their parent's medicine cabinet.
If you're
currently taking prescription medication, you must start taking steps to
safeguard your children from it. You lock up the booze, right? Today prescription
drugs falls into the same category. Once, you're done with the
medication, get rid of it. If the idea of getting rid of it is abhorrent
to you, realize that you, yourself may have developed a dependency.
If you live in Arizona the odds that your kids, family members,
friends and neighbors are caught in the grip of drug abuse and dependency
is very high. Don't let it ruin your lives – get help today.
