What are the Odds in Alaska?
39% OF YOUNG ADULTS BETWEEN THE AGE OF 18 TO 25 PARTICIPATED IN BINGE DRINKING.
38% OF ALASKA NATIVES SUICIDES AND 31% OF
ALASKA NATIVES HOMICIDES WERE LINKED TO ALCOHOL.
OF THE CRIMES
COMMITTED BY ALASKAN NATIVES, 97% WERE COMMITTED UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF
DRUGS AND ALCOHOL.
Alcohol consumption is so common
place that one tends not to realize just how insidious and damaging alcohol abuse can be. Much like the slowly
heated frog, you become so acclimated to the condition that by the time
you notice the heat your already cooked.
This seems to be what
has happened to Alaska. Alcohol is the states number one substance of
abuse. Its statistics lead the nation and are both eye opening and
shocking. And when I say shocking, I don't mean it lightly. It's
the leading cause of violent, suicidal, and accidental deaths in the
state.
In October of 2000, Ernie Turner director of the Alaska
Division of Alcoholism and Drug Use gave testimony to the senate committee
on Indian affairs.
It turns out that of Alaskan Natives (AN), 9
out of 10 people who chose to use alcohol became alcohol abusers. 38% of AN
suicides and 31% of AN homicides were linked to alcohol. Of the crimes
committed by Alaskan Natives, 97% were committed under the influence of
drugs and alcohol. Additionally, in rural Alaska the amount of violence
and crime that appears is directly proportional to the amount of alcohol
consumed.
You have to understand the magnitude of this. I'm not talking about a reservation filled with 500 people. Alaskan natives make up approximately one fifth of the population of Alaska. But the problem isn't limited to the rural areas of Alaska and the populace that lives there.
If you or someone you care about is
drinking,
don't wait until they become one of the statistics

According to a survey taken in 2004 by the Substance Abuse and Mental
Health Services Administration, 51% of people over the age of 12 in Alaska
drank alcohol in the prior month that the survey was taken. Binge drinking
rates are consistently higher in Alaska than the United States as a whole.
Clocking in at a whopping 39% percent in young adults aged 18 to 25.
In 2003 the Arrestee Drug Abuse Monitoring Program
(ADAM) found that 71% of the men arrested in Anchorage tested positive for
drugs or alcohol. And in the cases of the women who were arrested, 100%
tested positive solely for alcohol. It's no wonder that Alaska has the
highest Fetal Alcohol Syndrome rate in the nation.
But these
people aren't the homeless or the impoverished of the society. 84% of
male and 79% of female arrestees and have high school diplomas or GEDs.
They have jobs, health insurance, live in stable housing. This is your
neighbor, your co-worker, your husband, your wife and even your child.
Starting to get an idea of the magnitude of the problem? Simply
put, more than half the people you know drink alcohol and the majority of
them are binge drinkers.
