How Does Prescription Drug Addiction Happen?

Some people get addicted to or dependent on prescription drugs when they're given the drug by their doctor for an injury, illness or accident.

Unfortunately, many of the drugs people are prescribed every day are highly addictive.

OxyContin and other painkillers like Vicodin and Percocet, anti-anxiety drugs, sedatives, tranquilizers like Xanax and Clonopin, are all very easy to get addicted to.

Many people are not aware of the addictive nature of these drugs. They take them, thinking they'll be safe because the doctor prescribed them, but when they try to get off them, they have trouble.

Being addicted to or dependent on prescription drugs is nothing to be ashamed of. In fact, there are probably more people suffering from prescription drug addiction than addiction to cocaine, heroin, methamphetamine, marijuana and all the other drugs you think of when you think of drug addiction.

To get off prescription drugs, you sometimes need to go through a full drug rehab program - it just depends on how bad the situation has gotten.

But with some prescription drug problems, all you'll need is help getting off them safely and comfortably. That's where drug detox comes in. Most drug detox programs take less than a week.

Will More Drug Addiction Treatment be Needed After Drug Detox?

It is possible that you will need more than drug detox.

If you have been taking the drugs for a long time, you might need a drug rehab program as well.

Also, if you started taking them recreationally and have taken other drugs as well, simply getting off the drugs through drug detox might not be enough.

Many people take prescription drugs without a prescription. This is especially true for younger people who take them because they got them from a friend - who often got started on them by taking them from their parents' medicine cabinet.

They think they're going to just have fun - they think that because they were prescribed by a doctor and because their parents or other family members or friends take them, they're safe. They have no idea they can get addicted.

They also have no idea of how dangerous these drugs can be. There are more people dying from prescription drugs now than many of the illegal drugs combined.
