Drug Rehab Needed for Ohio's Heroin Distribution Problem
According to the Drug Enforcement Agency, distributors in Chicago,
Detriot and New York feed into Ohio's four major cities - Cleveland,
Cincinnati, Columbus and Toledo. From there, the drug is distributed
state-wide. Break the state into regions and you have Colombian black tar
heroin mainly in the north and Mexican black tar heroin mainly in the
south. With such efficiency established and territory marked so well, it
is no wonder that heroin distribution and abuse are on the rise in Ohio.
Unfortunately the amount of drug rehab programs available isn't enough
to keep up.
Though there has been a rise in the availability of
high purity, low cost heroin, according to the DEA, Urbana, Ohio has
recently seen a spike in the number of overdose cases. According to the
Sheriff's department, heroin can be "cut" with other
substances. Often, these substances are highly toxic and can create
adverse reactions when mixed with alcohol or prescription
drugs.
Nearly 20% of 18-25 year olds report illicit drug use in the
last month in Ohio. This is one in five young adults and aligns with
statements from Champaign County Sheriff Brent Emmons that heroin use has
become more frequent. With numbers this high, don't think this
couldn't have an effect on you by personal use or by the abuse
problems of a loved one. Heroin is highly addictive and, as with any drug,
there is always a risk of death.
In the state of Ohio,
admissions into drug rehab programs have increased from 6878 in 2002 to
8852 in 2006. Across the boards, the number of addicts is increasing and
without adequate drug education and effective drug rehab, those numbers
will continue to climb. Sheriff Emmons says to look for the warning signs.
With heroin users, there will be needle marks. However, these can be
covered by clothes. Other signs to look for are an increased need for
privacy and lethargy toward life. Additionally, signs of heroin abuse are
the paraphernalia connected with use, including syringes and rubber
tubing.
