Drug Rehab in Maryland Could Clean Up a Truly Horrible Drug Scene
The Baltimore Sun recently reported on the Maryland Inhalant Abuse Prevention Program that started in October, 2007. The program intends to educate students and parents about the dangers of inhaling household cleaning and, believe it or not, cooking products. In Maryland, inhalants are a real problem - they're very dangerous, kids have killed themselves with them and they do very serious brain damage. They could also lead to drug abuse and the need for drug rehab.
If people have gotten to the point of inhaling things like air fresheners and cooking sprays to get high, you would imagine that the rest of the drug scene is pretty bad. And you would be right.
Nearly 7% of the people in Maryland have used illegal drugs in the last month -that translates into over 300,000 people - a lot of whom are likely to need drug rehab.
With one out of every 14 or 15 people doing drugs, there is almost no chance for any person wanting to stay out of the drug world to do so - especially in the school system where it's likely that at least two people in every class are on drugs.
Another problem is the number of people trying marijuana for the first time - it's about 2% of the state population: Another 83,000 people - about 30,000 of whom are 12 to 17 years old. Many of them will continue smoking it, and might also get into other drugs. It goes on and on.
How do you stop it?
Edmund Burke, a statesman in England, once said, ""All that is necessary for the triumph of evil in America is for good men to do nothing." And that statement contains the key to stopping drug abuse in your family, with your friends and with anyone else you know.
Take action.
If you don't know anyone with a drug problem that you can get into drug rehab, you might even consider getting involved in anti-drug campaigns. After all, the people taking drugs now could offer them to your child at some time in the future. Or they could rob your house, kill your kid while driving under the influence of drugs, make it unsafe to leave your house at night, and put you in a position where you're looking for a safe part of Maryland in which to raise your kids.
Look at Baltimore. The drug scene in Baltimore is well known, as is the crime scene. They always so hand in hand.
Get those with a drug problem into a good Maryland drug rehab program - of which there are several - and educate those who don't have a problem so they won't be tempted when drugs are offered to them. Something can be done about it, but it's going to take the work of every concerned citizen - and drug abuse concerns us all.
