Alcohol Rehab Needed in California for the Homeless
Alcohol addiction is pretty nasty business. Often leading to loss of
income as well as housing, it's compounded by the lack of social
programs and good alcohol rehab programs available to help those who have
become afflicted. It's a plight understood all too well by the
homeless residing in Los Angeles, California.
Research has
found that half of all people who are homeless have had a substance abuse
problem at some point in their life. Alcohol abuse being the more
prevalent ;existing in 30 to 40 percent of homeless individuals. Sadly, in
addition to alcohol abuse being a trigger for homelessness all to often it
is an outcome of it as well.
Individuals find themselves at
the mercy of the system, being shuffled back and forth between shelters,
day programs, soup kitchens, and very often jail. And when those spots are
taken they are forced to find shelter in subways, bus stations and
abandoned buildings. For the alcoholic, the later is often chosen over the
shelter since shelters don't allow drinking and the withdrawal symptoms
the individual faces when night comes are just too great to bear.
Those able to muster enough strength to end the addiction must then deal
with the red tape associated with State and Federal funding programs. There
just aren't enough drug and alcohol rehab programs available to
them.
Alcoholics who are able to escape this nightmare do so only
because of their unwavering determination to make a change for the better.
A task not easily achieved for those addicted to alcohol and often
physically impossible due to the devastating effect alcohol abuse has on
the body.
It's obvious that our health and social programs
need improvement. Fortunately there are caring individuals who are working
tirelessly to improve the quality of services available to those in need.
But it won't happen tomorrow.
With that in mind, it's
important to take preventative steps before the person reaches that point.
