Alabama Drug Courts Go a Long Way to Reducing Crime through Treatment for Defendants in Need of Drug Rehab
When a person has become addicted to drugs the single most important thing in their life becomes getting the next high. Unfortunately, it's also what opens the door to bad checks, forgeries, theft, murder; you name it the list of crimes and misdemeanors goes on and on.
Withdrawal can be so physically and psychologically painful that one would steal food from a baby's mouth if it could buy another hit of heroin. Actions once considered morally decrepit and socially taboo become nothing more than a means to an end.
Judges have seen the same offenders appear in their courts time and time again making it blatantly obvious that traditional methods of strict probation and mandatory incarceration aren't effective solutions to the addict. Taking this into consideration, the Chief Justice's Office is supporting the establishment of drug courts in all 67 counties of Alabama.
It's a step in the right direction. Not only will it help take the strain off the overly burdened justice system but it will help make the streets safer for Alabama citizens since recidivism rates drop by two thirds when drug courts are employed.
Drug courts work because the focus is upon eliminating the drug and alcohol addiction not the individual. It gives the individual a chance to get off the drugs and get back to living a happy and productive life instead of being caught in the revolving door of the criminal justice system.
For those we're unable to reach, its good news since they'll have another opportunity to take back control of their life.
